What is Buckets and Spades?

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Norwood has adapted the way it is delivering its Children and Family Services and is continuing to provide support to our valued service users and Jewish families, schools and children. Norwood’s Buckets and Spades Lodge is a large purpose built bungalow in Finchley with six bedrooms and three adapted bathrooms.

It’s a unique service which for the last 20 years has provided overnight, weekend or longer stays for children and young people up to the age of 18 who have multiple, complex and sometimes profound disabilities and other health needs.

The service provides continuous one to one care from Norwood’s qualified professionals enabling children and young people to learn new skills and enjoy fun activities while also offering family members the much needed opportunity for respite.

It offers:

  • a day service providing two to twelve hours every weekend, on bank holidays, during school holidays and on Thursdays and Fridays during term time
  • planned or emergency overnight stays for one or more nights.

Who is Buckets and Spades for?

Children and young people up to 18 years old with physical and learning disabilities, and complex health needs

What can Buckets and Spades offer my child?

Bucket and Spades can offer your child:

  • a personalised and tailored service providing one-to-one support during the day and on-hand staff throughout the night
  • a safe and caring environment
  • dedicated and trained staff who can support your child if they have epilepsy and additional health needs, require tube-feeding or medication.
  • a fully accessible building if your child uses a wheelchair, as well as a hoist and a changing bed
  • a range of exciting activities and outings, including:
  • arts and crafts
  • baking
  • cycling
  • music sessions
  • playing in the paddling pool
  • picnics
  • sensory garden
  • sensory room
  • sports
  • trips to the bowling alley, cinema, circus, park, farm, swimming pool and shopping centre
  • outings to London attractions, such as Buckingham Palace, Kew Gardens, London Zoo and the Natural History Museum
  • celebrating birthdays, Jewish festivals and other holidays – from dressing up at Purim and making cheesecake at Shavuot, to decorating cards for Mother’s Day and making pancakes for Shrove Tuesday.

How can my child and I benefit from Buckets and Spades?

Your child will have the chance to:

  • gain greater confidence
  • become more independent
  • interact with other children
  • improve their social and communication skills.

You can enjoy a break, knowing that your child is being properly cared for by people who understand their needs.
