Leaving a gift in your Will to Norwood supports vulnerable families in the community28 November 2018FundraisingLeaving a gift in your Will helps build a strong future for Norwood and the countless families who need the charity’s support to grow stronger and thrive. Thanks to the generosity of those who include a gift in their Will to Norwood, the charity is able to support people like Jess and her family. Jess suffers from a rare condition called Rett syndrome, diagnosed at the age of two. It means that she now requires around the clock care, uses a wheelchair, is tube fed and non-verbal.Jess’s complex needs can take their toll on her family, who initially had no support at home and provided care for her 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This involved broken sleep every night, frequent hospital visits and a strict daily routine to be followed at all times.Thankfully, Jess’s family were referred to Norwood’s Buckets and Spades respite centre, which provides overnight short breaks for children with disabilities and complex health needs. The service gives Jess the chance to thrive in a ‘home away from home’ where she can try new things in a safe environment, interact with other children and enjoy the specialist sensory room and adapted garden.Jess’s mum, Liz says: “When Jess started going to Buckets and Spades, our whole lives changed. For one weekend a month, we can relax and recharge, knowing that Jess is happy, safe and cared for by specially trained staff, supported by specialist equipment.”When Jess spends time at Buckets and Spades, she can have fun and is well cared for. Jess’s mum can enjoy two nights of unbroken sleep a month and the whole family have peace of mind, knowing that Jess is receiving the careful and loving attention she needs.Jess left with Annette Shimoni then Manager of Buckets and SpadesNorwood can only keep changing lives for people like Jess and her family with your support.
