Yonni’s fundraising triumph in the Big Apple

7 November 2014

Last Sunday, YN Board Chair Yonni Abramson raised more than £25,000 for Norwood running the New York City Marathon – more than any other member of YN, Norwood’s network for young professionals, so far. The 26.2 course started on Staten Island and covered all five boroughs, ending in Central Park. Yonni completed the race in just 3 hours and 53 minutes.

The New York Marathon is notoriously punishing, and, on the morning of the marathon, conditions weren’t good. Yonni said: "I arrived at Staten Island at 6.30 am. It was freezing cold, wet and windy, so by the time I started my feet were numb!"

Yonni explained that once he got going he was carried along by cheering crowds lining the route: "You’re with 50,000 people and the atmosphere is electric! It’s an amazing city and the crowd is incredible. It was a great day."

Before the marathon Yonni trained for eighteen weeks, despite struggling with an ankle injury: "It’s important to go outside of your comfort zone. I decided to try to run it in under four hours – I must be mad!"

Encouraging more runners to take up the challenge, Yonni said: "It’s all about giving back – giving time, giving your own money, and encouraging others to give their money too. Challenges are a great way to do it. Norwood has amazing challenges. They’re very sociable and you make great friends."
