Norwood riders triumph in “ultimate” London to Brighton bike ride 25 June 2014 Press Release A thousand keen cyclists were cheered across the finish line on Brighton beach in Sunday's blazing sunshine in the LA fitness Capital to Coast cycle challenge for charity, organised by Norwood. The event raised money for three charities — Norwood, the Down’s Syndrome Association and Action Medical Research. This year it is expected to raise over £200,000 for Norwood, a leading charity which supports adults with learning disabilities, vulnerable children and their families, at home, at school and throughout their lives, the Down's Syndrome Association which helps people with Down's syndrome to live full and rewarding lives, and Action Medical Research, which finds and funds the best research to help sick and disabled children. Riders chose from one of four routes covering 75 or 60 miles, two of which started from the one of the capital's most iconic landmarks, the EDF Energy London Eye. From there the cyclists made their way down to the coast, taking in the early morning views along London's South Bank before battling the steep hills of the South Downs on their way to the finish line. The LA fitness Capital to Coast ride is aimed at all ages and abilities, and actively encourages those with disabilities to take part. This year's ride included a number of cyclists with learning disabilities who are supported by Norwood. Nick Ivil, Lawrence Black and Richard Tooke were among the group who rode on tandem cycles with their supporters. Nick Ivil, who attends Norwood’s sport and leisure services said: "The race is a life changing experience!" This is Nick's fourth year on the ride. Peter Girvan, who is also supported by Norwood said: "When we got to Brighton there were crowds of people all cheering us on. It was a great day!" Ian Tate, Business Development Manager for Challenges at Norwood said: "Given the heat and the challenging cycle routes, I thought our riders did an amazing job. They have all certainly justified the incredible amount of money they have raised for the partner charities. There was a fantastic atmosphere along the way and I'd like to thank everyone involved who made the day such a resounding success."
