YN cyclists rise to the challenge

14 May 2013

I’ve always wanted to take on a challenge of this magnitude to keep fit and get in shape and I knew this would be a great opportunity to fundraise for the charity at the same time. At times when I thought I wanted to give up, I remembered all the support given to me by friends and family which really gave me the motivation to keep going. The group was also amazing, and everyone really encouraged each other the whole way. I have made great friends.

A group of Young Norwood supporters took on the harsh landscape and climate of Morocco over the May Bank Holiday weekend, raising over £50,000 for Norwood. The 30 fundraisers joined forces for a four-day bike ride from Marrakech to the Atlas Mountains to raise money for the charity, which helps children, families and people with learning disabilities.

Participants enjoyed taking in the breath-taking scenery of remote walnut forests, waterfalls and crystal clear pools whilst also tackling steep and rugged mountainous terrain. The cyclists also had the opportunity to explore Berber villages before completing the ride in the city’s capital Marrakech.

The YN Morocco Challenge was Norwood’s fourth YN bike ride organised for young professionals. As with all Norwood challenges, the participants were accompanied by people with learning disabilities who use Norwood’s services.

YN Challenger Chair James Scott, said: "The YN Moroccan challenge was the toughest experience I’ve undertaken with the charity so far. We experienced some extreme conditions, from near freezing three-hour ascents in the Atlas Mountains to 38 degree heat across the Moroccan foothills and desert. Norwood makes such a life changing difference and it was amazing to see this first-hand with Philip; it has made me a supporter for life. Bring on the next challenge, a sky dive in July!"

Natasha Tishbi 23, from St Johns Wood took part and raised over £2500 in sponsorship. She said: "I’ve always wanted to take on a challenge of this magnitude to keep fit and get in shape and I knew this would be a great opportunity to fundraise for the charity at the same time. At times when I thought I wanted to give up, I remembered all the support given to me by friends and family which really gave me the motivation to keep going. The group was also amazing, and everyone really encouraged each other the whole way. I have made great friends."

Nicola Koppelmann, Business Development Manager of YN said: "The YN Morocco challenge was a great opportunity for our young supporters to get fit, meet new people and explore the country’s incredible landscape, whilst raising vital funds for the thousands of people who turn to Norwood for support. It was a real challenge for all those involved and I would like to thank everyone who took part and helped us raise such a tremendous amount of money."

The next YN Challenge will be the YN Skydive which will take place on Sunday 21 July.
