At the Norwood Car Wash Launch!

24 October 2012

Norwood is determined to give the people we support meaningful opportunities in every aspect of their life.

Sussex’s first commercial car wash to be entirely staffed by people with learning disabilities was officially launched yesterday in Lewes. The new Future Clean site, which has been funded by East Sussex County Council (ESCC), comes hot on the heels of the project’s success in Hatch End in London, which has been in operation since last summer.

Based at East Sussex County Council car park in Lewes, Norwood Future Clean is an eco-friendly hand valet and car wash, which through the use of bio-degradable cleaning fluids is virtually waterless and demonstrates Norwood’s green credentials.

The project is based on social enterprise principles, as trainees are taught important work skills which will help them to make the transition into employment in the open market or within the project itself.

Nigel Bolton, Business Manager at Norwood said: "Norwood is determined to give the people we support meaningful opportunities in every aspect of their life."

"I’d like to thank the trainees for showing commitment to learn new skills and demonstrating the high standards that they can achieve. Today isn’t only about the launch of Future Clean in Lewes, it’s about their own futures and the opportunities that they and other people with learning disabilities will have to gain meaningful employment."

Cllr Bill Bentley from East Sussex County Council cut the ribbon at the event before addressing Future Clean workers, guests and trainer Alexandra Finch. He said: "Future Clean is about trainees learning to be part of the community and showing what they can achieve. I want to see Future Clean in every district and borough across the county. From this acorn we are going to grow an oak."

Paul Marshall, a Norwood Future Clean trainee, said: "My job gets me out of the house and helps me make friends. I enjoy working as part of a team and it helps my self-confidence."

Lewes Future Clean is currently open to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and training sessions are held throughout the week. It costs from just £8 to have your car valeted in inside and out.
