1,400 Cyclists Saddle Up to Raise £300,000 for Norwood and the Down’s Syndrome Association

2 July 2012

Singer, Britain’s Got Talent judge and LA fitness Creative Director, Alesha Dixon waved off the first of 1,400 cyclists early yesterday morning at the start of the annual LA fitness Capital to Coast Cycle Ride for Charity, led by TV presenters Matt Barbet and Jeff Brazier.

The event saw Matt and Jeff join around 600 riders starting from the London Eye on the capital’s Southbank, while a further 800 cyclists set off from Hampton Court and other points along the route to the Brighton finishing line on the south coast.

The event was in aid of Norwood, a charity helping to support people with disabilities and their families, and the Down’s Syndrome Association. Taking place each year, it’s suitable for cyclists of all abilities and encourages people with learning disabilities to take part in the ride – usually riding on tandem cycles with their supporters. Their participation not only inspires other riders, but also instils an immense sense of achievement when they get to Brighton.

Alesha said:

"The LA fitness Capital to Coast charity bike ride is an opportunity to be part of something very special – 2,000 riders of all abilities cycling to Brighton in aid of two amazing charities – Norwood and Down’s Syndrome Association, which help people with learning disabilities live full and rewarding lives."

Now in its 17th year, the LA fitness Capital to Coast ride has established itself as the alternative London to Brighton bike ride, and the event is on target to reach its goal of £300,000 for the Charities.

Matt said: "As a supporter of Norwood I’m passionate about the fantastic work they do, and as a cyclist I’m passionate about getting out on my bike, so doing LA fitness Capital to Coast was the perfect way to combine the two. It’s no easy feat riding these distances and I think it’s great that so many people can improve their own fitness while benefitting others at the same time too."
