Challenge Details

  • Start: Norwood HQ Stanmore
  • Finish: Norwood Residential Home Ravenswood, Berkshire
  • 50 miles one way/100 miles return

Norwood has a long history that dates back to 1795, but the heart of Norwood Challenges lies at Ravenswood Village. In 1992 Norwood was the first charity to undertake an international charity cycling Challenge, but from the very beginning, we included the people we support on all our adventures – many of whom were from Ravenswood (and some of whom still live there today). Riding on a tandem with a lead rider, they were great characters and added a resonance and sense of purpose to the Challenge, enriching the lives of all that took part. It remains an integral part of the Norwood Challenge experience today.

This year, we’re cycling back to Ravenswood, to where it all started – a glorious 50-mile cycle route via Windsor, where we’ll join up with some our favourite Ravenswood characters and cycle in together to enjoy a relaxed lunch on their home turf. It’s your opportunity to take on a first time Challenge or enjoy an early year warm-up ride, experience some of that magical Norwood camaraderie plus directly see where your fundraising can make a difference.

Itinerary

It’s an early morning 8am coffee start at the Norwood HQ in Stanmore, with a quick check-over of the bikes and a prompt set-off for 8.30am. You will have been provided with links to download the route but don’t be alarmed, you won’t be doing it on your own, you’ll be divided into smaller groups here with a nominated lead rider – fully supported by the experience of the Norwood Cycle Club backing you all the way.

After an approximate 15 miles, it’s a chance to get your bearings, regroup and top-up on water before heading for Windsor (at 30 miles) where we get to enjoy a long-awaited coffee and cake –hopefully meeting up with some of our tandem teams who will ride through Windsor Great Park with us. It’s an enjoyable last stretch with only an approx. 180m height gain following a signposted route into Ravenswood Village for lunch. 50 miles done!

While Ravenswood has undergone numerous changes over the years, it remains an important part of our history and we’ll get to see at ground level the difference your fundraising can make. There will be a light buffet lunch and group tours of The Stables, the gym, pool, the Tager Centre, the various homes and the assisted tandems we use – ensuring that the continued inclusiveness of cycling remains at the heart of what we do. Organise for the family to come down and join you OR book on to the organised return coach (additional charge) home.

Feeling up to it? Cycle back and make it the full 100 miles!
