Portage home-visiting service

What is Portage

Portage is a home visitor educational service for pre-school children with special educational needs, and their families.

What do we offer?

Norwood’s Portage Service (Somers Children and Family Centre) is available to Jewish families living in the Stamford Hill area who have a baby or young child under three years with additional needs, a disability or delay in any area of development.

Our Portage home visitors support families to help you develop a quality of life and experience.

As a parent, you can receive regular home visits from a trained Portage specialist who has wide experience in child development and lives within the community. They will work with you and your family to set goals for learning and development, beginning at the level your baby or child is at, and use creative play ideas to develop and stimulate your child to learn, communicate and develop relationships.

Portage offers the visits that holds families together and a period of calm in what can be a chaotic environment.

Visits are personalised to your requirements, and are usually weekly or fortnightly, depending on the local service and the individual special needs of your child.

Norwood’s Portage visitors are trained for their role and have been accredited by the National Portage Association. The sessions they offer will be flexible and development checklists may be used as a framework to assist you and your family.

Our Portage practitioners will support you to make informed choices about your child’s development and supporting you so you can feel confident in supporting a child with learning difficulties.
