Norwood launches new-look 2006-07 Annual Review

Norwood Annual Review 2006-07Norwood, the UK’s leading Jewish charity for children and families, published its Annual Review for 2006/07 this week, with figures showing that it spent more than £32m on providing its vital services to the community. Total income was £35m, of which £23.5m came from local authorities and health authorities. Voluntary income from companies, individuals, trusts and foundations exceeded £9m for the first time thanks to an exciting range of community and corporate events, sporting challenges and patronage initiatives which cost a total of £2.3m to organise. Therefore, compared with last year, the proportion of Norwood’s total voluntary income spent on fundraising fell from one third to one quarter. Norwood also received £1.8m towards the construction of buildings to be used for future new services and £0.6m on income from its investments. Because of generous donor support, Norwood was able to put aside a small amount to be spent the following year.

The review highlights Norwood’s many achievements across its services and flags up new initiatives. It is divided into four main sections that illustrate the breadth of the organisation’s work: Children and young people focuses on developments within Binoh, Norwood’s education and therapy service, Buckets & Spades Lodge, its respite care home for children with disabilities and its three Children & Family Centres in Hendon, Hackney and Redbridge. Families covers Fostering and Adoption, Family Services and Norwood’s Social Work teams, Adult Services concentrates on the Charity’s residential homes for adults with disabilities in London and Ravenswood Village in Berkshire and Making it Happen puts the spotlight on the vital role played by Norwood’s staff and volunteers. The structure of the review reflects the different stages of the life cycle – baby, child, adult, and enables readers to appreciate the extent to which Norwood is there for its service users throughout their lives.

Norma Brier, Norwood’s Chief Executive, said: “We are pleased to report continued innovation and good progress in several areas of Norwood’s work over the last year. The Young People’s Focus Group initiative was recognised by the Big Lottery Fund with a grant of £132,000, we identified an opportunity to develop an inclusive nursery school at our Children and Family Centre in Hendon, we completed the Wellbeing at Bearsted project and finalised plans for the construction of two capital projects at Ravenswood Village: the Tager Autism Centre and the Pamela Barnett Centre. We are also placing an even greater emphasis on putting our service users at the centre of our thinking and our operations. The introduction of Person Centred Planning, placing people in control of their own development and life plan, will ensure that users have a stake in the service they receive.”

Philip Bunt, Norwood’s Director of Corporate Services, said:” The funding of social care provision remains under pressure, but by carefully controlling costs we were able to extend our services and generate a modest surplus for the financial year.” He also paid tribute to the valuable role played by Norwood’s 1200 staff and 650 volunteers: “Well-qualified and highly-motivated staff are crucial to the delivery of effective services. Norwood also greatly values the contribution made by its volunteers. For the first time Norwood has been able to put a monetary value on their contribution: their time was worth between £150,000-£250,000 to the organisation.”
