  • Norwood statement on Government adoption announcement The Government today announced plans to set up a panel which will review the process by which prospective adopters are recruited.
  • Rabbi Alan Plancey joins Norwood Advisory Council A well-respected Rabbi and County Councillor in Hertfordshire has been appointed to Norwood’s Advisory Council. Rabbi Alan Plancey, 70, is Emeritus Rabbi at Borehamwood & Elstree Synagogue, having been its Minister for 30 years. He is also a member of The Cabinet of the Chief Rabbi and represents Borehamwood North on Hertfordshire County Council, where he sits on the Cabinet Panels for Children's Services & Corporate Parenting and Education & Skills.
  • An early Norwood Chanukah at JCoSS Norwood celebrated Chanukah early as more than 200 people who use its services attended its annual festive dinner and disco at JCoSS on Monday evening. Guests were welcomed with nibbles and drinks served by a group of JCoSS students, who were later joined by headteacher Jeremy Stowe-Lindner for a Menorah lighting ceremony. They then sat down to a three course meal, followed by customary donuts, before being invited to dance the night away.
  • Gifts galore as Norwood holds annual Toy Sweep Chanukah came early for 50 children who use Norwood’s services as they took part in the Charity’s annual Toy Sweep at Toys R Us at Brent Cross on Sunday 4th December. The youngsters, their parents and Norwood staff gathered dozens of toys, games and other gifts using £4,500 raised by the Toy Sweep Committee. These will now be distributed among the Norwood’s children and family services, including its three family centres in Hendon, Hackney and Redbridge, its Unity recreational club, and Buckets
  • Norwood Poker 100 raises £85,000 The chips were up as 100 wannabe card sharps raised £85,000 at the second annual Norwood 100 Poker tournament. Players displayed their best poker faces during multiple hands of Triple Chance No Limit Texas Hold’em at the fundraising event, held on Monday night at the Playboy Club in Mayfair.
  • Israel Bike Riders raise £260,000 for Norwood Some took the high road, and some took the low road, but the combined efforts of a group of 55 cyclists who rode through Israel in aid of Norwood has generated a wheely amazing £260,000. During the five-day adventure, which took place 19-27 November, 30 riders rode from Jerusalem to Eilat, while a further 25 opted for an extremely challenging north to south route through the land of milk and honey.   • Victory for Norwood over mobility benefit cut Norwood has welcomed an announcement by the Government that it is withdrawing its plans to remove the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance. In a written statement to MPs, Work and Pensions Minister Maria Miller yesterday confirmed that the proposal will not be included in the upcoming Welfare Reform Bill.   • Mitzvah Day volunteers roll up their sleeves for Norwood Volunteers including the Mayor of Barnet, Cllr Lisa Rutter, rolled up their sleeves and gave up their time for Norwood as part of Mitzvah Day.   • 65 saddle up for Northern Thailand cycle adventure 65 cycling enthusiasts got into gear for Norwood’s international bike ride in Thailand, which has so far raised an incredible £250,000.   • Norwood helps launch ‘@ The Acorn’ in Berkshire Norwood has launched a new social group in Berkshire in partnership with Wokingham, Bracknell & Districts Mencap. The group, called '@ the Acorn', gives people with profound and multiple learning disabilities the chance to meet new friends and take part in fun activities. The day of good deeds includesa special tea party for members of the Unity recreational group for children and young people with disabilities, which will be attended by the Mayor.   • Douglas and Michael gear up to raise funds for Norwood A leading solicitor with an incurable degenerative disorder will be amongst a group of cyclists taking part in a sponsored bike ride in Israel in aid of Norwood, a charity which helps people with learning disabilities and children and families in need. The 380km five-day adventure, from 19-27 November, will cover the scenic route from Ashkelon to Eilat and involve crossing notoriously difficult terrain in the Negev desert.

  • Norwood Future Clean is a London first The first commercial car wash in London to be manned by people with a learning disability was today launched by leading UK charity Norwood. Norwood Future Clean, which is part of the Charity’s rapidly expanding Supported Employment programme, is a training project that teaches participants vital work skills.   • Children’s Minister officially opens JCoSS and PSRP Pupils and staff at JCoSS, the UK’s first cross-communal Jewish secondary school, yesterday celebrated its official opening at a ceremony attended by over 300 people.   • Norwood celebrates Learning Disability Week 2011 To mark Learning Disability Week 2011 (20-26 June), Norwood is organising a range of activities to raise awareness about the issues that affect people with a learning disability.
  • Letter by Norma Brier in the Guardian The following letter by Norma Brier, Chief Executive of Norwood, appeared in the Guardian's Society supplement on 8 June. It was written in response to the BBC Panorama programme, Undercover Care: The Abuse Exposed, about the systematic abuse of adults with learning disabilities at the Winterbourne View hospital in Bristol.
  • Celebrating a special Shabbat at the NNLS Congregants at the New North London Synagogue gave a warm welcome to a group of Norwood services users on Friday evening as they hosted the first of a series of special Shabbat services for people with learning disabilities. Around 20 people who live in Norwood residential and supported accommodation attended the service at the congregation’s newly-opened building, in East End Road, before being invited to join NNLS members for a three-course meal prepared by volunteers.

  • Ravenswood welcomes Dutch team for football tournament Residents from Ravenswood, Norwood’s residential community for people with learning disabilities in Berkshire, played host to a team of sporting enthusiasts from Holland this week as they travelled to the UK for a special 7-a-side football tournament. Dutch side FC Meo, joined eight teams of other players with learning disabilities from west Berkshire, including two from Ravenswood, for the annual football competition at Cantley Park in Wokingham on Wednesday.

  • Norwood wins Big Lottery funding for high tech travel project Norwood has been awarded an incredible £235,000 by the Big Lottery Fund for an innovative project which uses SMART phone technology to help people with learning disabilities acquire key travel skills and thereby become more independent. Freedom through Travel, is a three-year scheme which begins in June, and will provide travel training to 88 adults who use Norwood’s residential and supported living services.
  • ‘Great’ Britain YN Finance reception raises £16,000 for Norwood The role that the City should play in Britain’s economic recovery was the main topic of debate at the third YN Finance reception, which raised £16,000 for Norwood. More than 150 young finance professionals attended last night's fundraiser at the offices of leading law firm Mayer Brown.
  • New room at Buckets & Spades offers feast for the senses Children and young people who use Buckets & Spades Lodge are being offered a feast for the senses thanks to a new play and therapy facility. Officially opened yesterday, the state-of-the-art sensory room at Norwood’s overnight short break service in Finchley was made possible by a £30,000 grant from the Philip Green Memorial Trust.

The event last Wednesday was held at the Halcyon Gallery in Mayfair, which once again generously sponsored the evening. More than 200 dedicated donors enjoyed a drinks and canapés reception and a private viewing of landscape art, including the rarely-seen Chemin dans les vignes, Argenteuil, by Claude Monet.
  • Andrea to complete fantastic four for Norwood Fundraiser Andrea Fraquelli is hoping to run up a huge total for Norwood this year by completing a quartet of marathons in a combined total of 12 hours. Andrea, Operations Manager at the Metropolitan Restaurants Group, is already a regular Norwood participant in the London Marathon. He will join 21 other Norwood runners on 17 April to raise vital funds for the Charity’s life-changing work with people with learning disabilities, and children and families in need.
  • Norwood celebrates Purim in style Norwood hosted a Purim extravaganza last night for more than 100 adults who use the Charity’s services. The glitzy bash was kindly hosted by the recently-opened Jewish Community Secondary School (JCoSS) in East Barnet.
  • Ravenswood welcomes HRH The Princess Royal Residents of Ravenswood gave a right royal welcome to The Princess Royal as she visited the residential community for adults with learning disabilities yesterday, for a tour of its stables. The stables, which cater for both Ravenswood residents and riders from the wider community, are an affiliated member group of the Riding for the Disabled Association. Princess Anne, who first visited Ravenswood in 1972 and whose mother HM The Queen is Patron of Norwood, is President of the RDA.

  • Another marathon milestone for Flora Fundraiser extraordinaire Flora Frank notched up yet another milestone earlier this month by completing her 22nd marathon in aid of Norwood. Wintry conditions in the UK meant the power-walking great-grandmother had little opportunity to train for the gruelling Tiberias Marathon in Israel on 6 January. But she still managed to cross the line in just over six hours and is on course to raise £18,000 for the charity this year.

  • Norwood gets a healthy ‘Kickstart’ from Heart Research UK Norwood is launching an exciting new initiative to help people with learning disabilities learn about the importance of a healthy lifestyle, thanks to a £8,700 Healthy Heart grant from Heart Research UK. Under the Kickstart project, Norwood will be able to run regular ‘Healthy Heart‘ workshops to help the adults who use its services to make informed choices about their lifestyle and improve their heart health through diet and exercise.
  • Norwood’s Annual Dinner raises £3.3m Norwood’s annual fundraising dinner, held on Monday night at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair, raised an incredible £3.3m. More than 1,300 guests, including the Chief Rabbi, Lord Sacks, entertainment mogul Simon Cowell and entrepreneur Theo Paphitis attended the glittering event – which featured guest speaker Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.

  • Norwood 100 Poker Tournament raises £80,000 Triple Chance No Limit Texas Hold’em rules applied as more than 100 players raised £80,000 during the inaugural Norwood 100 Poker Tournament last Thursday. The fundraising event, the brainchild of Norwood supporters Gary Bluston, Mark Pollack, Nitzan Yaniv, was held in The Red Room at Les Ambassadeurs Club in Mayfair. The tournament was attended by several top professional players, including Tony ‘The Lizard’ Bloom and Andrew Feldman, although the first prize eventually went to Steve Kemsley.

  • YPFG helps spread the word about human rights A human rights charity received valuable advice from members of Norwood’s groundbreaking Young People’s Focus Group (YPFG) on how to spread the word about human rights. Using a small grant from the Access to Volunteering fund, the Children’s Rights Alliance for England (CRAE) has spent the last six months asking disabled children and young people for their advice on how to make its resources and training on children’s rights more accessible.
  • Elliott Goldstein appointed as new Norwood Trustee Elliott Goldstein, former chair of Limmud and a rising star within the Jewish community was announced as the newest member of Norwood’s Board of Trustees on Friday. Along with 11 other trustees, Goldstein, 30, will help to decide the charity’s strategic direction and will have personal responsibility for overseeing its approach to marketing and communications.

Respite Kids raises money to provide Jewish families with disabled children additional respite care throughout the year at no cost to them.

The chance to complete National Vocational Qualifications in Health and Social Care is offered by Norwood to those employees working with adults and children.
  • Norwood pays tribute to the late Lady Jakobovits Norwood wishes to express its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Lady Jakobovits, who died on Friday aged 81. Lady Jakobovits, whose late husband, the former Chief Rabbi Lord Jakobovits, was a Vice President of Norwood, was a passionate supporter of the Charity’s work throughout her life. She was a committed advocate for children with special needs and her daughters Esther and Shoshana were among the founding trustees of Binoh, which later merged with Norwood.
  • Neville Kahn appointed as new Norwood Trustee A leading professional who helped set up a key Norwood fundraising committee has been appointed as the newest member of its Board of Trustees. Neville Kahn is a well-known and respected member of the Jewish community and is also a leading figure in the world of business and finance.
  • Young Israeli visitors help Norwood celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut A group of teenagers from northern Israel were the guests of honour at a party organised by Norwood to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut – the Israeli national day of independence. More than 30 adults who use the Charity’s London services attended the party on Tuesday at Canon’s Community Hall in Stanmore.
  • JCoSS announces first PSRP Director JCoSS, the UK’s first cross-community Jewish state secondary school, has announced the appointment of David Wilson as the first Director of its 50-place Pears Special Resource Provision (PSRP) for pupils with Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC).

  • Lawrence will go for gold at European games Track and field star Lawrence Black has his eyes on medal success after being selected to represent Great Britain in the 2010 Special Olympics European Games. Lawrence lives at Ravenswood, which is Norwood’s residential community for adults with learning disabilities in Crowthorne, Berkshire.
  • Norwood appoints Shoshana Bloom as new Jewish Cultural Manager Norwood is pleased to announce that it has appointed Shoshana Bloom as its new Jewish Cultural Manager. Shoshana will have responsibility for developing, supporting and encouraging a vibrant Jewish atmosphere, both culturally and spiritually, for the people who use Norwood’s services, as well as its staff and volunteers.

  • Rajasthan Bike Ride raises £600,000 for Norwood A group of 150 charity cyclists returned to the UK from northern India on Sunday after raising an incredible £600,000 on Norwood’s Rajasthan Bike Ride.
  • Israel Bike Ride raises more than £60,000 for Norwood Some 26 charity cyclists returned to the UK on Sunday tired but elated after raising more than £60,000 on Norwood’s Israel Bike Ride. During the course of the week, they completed a stunning 400km circular route which started and finished in the ancient and beautiful city of Jerusalem after winding its way through the Judean Hills, the Negev Highlands and the Dead Sea.
  • Get on your bike for Norwood, urges Maccabiah medal winner Danny Ackerman, a British medal hero at the recent Maccabiah Games is calling on cycling enthusiasts to get on their bikes to raise money for Norwood during its Israel Bike Ride, which will be held from 17-25 October 2009.   • Move to Herts raises record £40,000 for Norwood’s Junior Bike Ride Almost 500 cyclists used their pedal power to kick off Learning Disability Week by raising a record-breaking £40,000 for Norwood at its annual Junior Bike Ride held on Father’s Day, Sunday 21 June 2009 in Elstree. Previously the event was in Berkshire but the ride was held in Hertfordshire this year to make it more accessible to young riders in North West London.
  • Marathon heroes raise £80,000 for Norwood Norwood’s 24 runners ran the 26.2 miles of the Flora London Marathon 2009 in the glorious sunshine yesterday, raising £80,000 for the leading children and families charity. The charity had the largest number of runners of all the Jewish community charities taking part in the event and international participants included a cowgirl who had flown over from Wyoming to take part, as well as 65 year-old power-walking great-grandmother from Edgware, Flora Frank.
  • Record-breaking 400 riders for Norwood’s Junior Bike Ride Challenge Over 400 participants from London, Essex and Hertfordshire are taking part in Norwood’s annual Junior Bike Ride and there’s still time for more riders to sign-up.   • Norwood offers transition advice for teens It’s difficult enough to be a teenager but young people with learning disabilities who are making the transition to adulthood have an even tougher time. That’s why Norwood has created a new drop-in service at Norwood’s Kennedy Leigh Children & Family Centre and Pears Wing in Hendon every Wednesday between 10am – 1pm.
  • Norwood leads the field in safeguarding children in the Jewish Community Norwood was recently chosen to host a high level delegation of representatives from the Ministry of Welfare in Israel who spent four days in London learning more about procedures and practice in the UK around safeguarding children at risk of abuse.

  • YN Lawyers Reception 2008 Top QC David Pannnick was the special guest speaker at Norwood's annual YN Lawyers Reception. The evening was attended by nearly 250 young legal professionals and raised £26,000.
  • The Apprentice 2008 Lee McQueen, 'The Apprentice' Series Four winner, plus five fellow contestants ensured a sell-out fundraising evening in aid of Norwood. The event, attended by over 330 guests, was hosted by Emma Howard and featured the show’s executive producer Michele Kurland, raising over £26,000.
  • Norwood Golf Day 2008 Around 100 golfers clubbed together for the annual Bank of Ireland Norwood Golf Day at the Dyrham Park Golf and Country Club in Barnet, raising £133,000.

  • Latin Fever 2008 The Tabby Cat Lounge hosted the YN N-Joy committee’s Latin Fever party on Thursday 27 March. Attended by over a hundred revellers and raising £1,600, the latin music-themed event combined dance classes with a club night, ensuring a fantastic carnival atmosphere.
  • Disney Cartoon “Bolt” raises money for Norwood A preview screening of the Disney cartoon “Bolt” at the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley on December 14 raised over £2,500 for Norwood, the UK's leading charity supporting children, families and adults, coping with disabilities and social disadvantage, in the Jewish community and beyond.
  • Children’s Chanukah lit up by Norwood’s Toy Sweep There was an atmosphere of feverish excitement at Toys R Us in Brent Cross on Sunday 7 December, when 40 children from across Norwood’s services took part in the Charity’s annual Toy Sweep.
  • Distressed Investing Dinner puts Norwood on the Map 200 guests from the distressed assets industry filled the ballroom at Claridge’s when they attended the third Distressed Investors Dinner on Monday 6 October. Guests heard speaker Alex Brummer, author of a definitive book on the credit crunch and veteran economic commentator with over 30 years journalistic experience, which has earned him a host of business and financial journalist awards.
  • Final Backgammon qualifier raises funds for Norwood Norwood held the fourth and final qualifying tournament of the current Backgammon Series, sponsored by the Pears Foundation, on Monday November 24 at exclusive London restaurant Sketch.
  • Cocktails in the City raises funds for Norwood An end-of-summer party entitled Cocktails in the City raised £14,000 for Norwood.
