Norwood Thailand Bike Ride

65 cycling enthusiasts got into gear for Norwood’s international bike ride in Thailand, which has so far raised an incredible £250,000. The ten day adventure began amongst the towering silk cotton trees of Thailand’s second largest city, Chiang Mai, and finished at the infamous Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Burma and Laos meet. During the ride, the group covered a 318km route through remote northern Thailand and explored areas beyond the usual tourist trail, travelling through breath-taking scenery comprising of dense jungle, emerald paddy fields, rapid rivers and tumbling waterfalls.

One brave cyclist Michael Kuperberg, 40, from Harrow, who has been supported by Norwood into paid employment at its Deli in Hendon over recent months, rode tandem with Ian Tate, Norwood’s Business Development Manager for Challenges. He said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of cycling in Thailand and it was especially fun riding with Ian! I am so grateful to Norwood for all their help and support, they have been really great to me and I hope to work here until I retire!”

Also taking part was David Lightman, 50, from Finchley, who has completed a Norwood cycle challenge every year since they were first launched in 1992. He said: “I can honestly say that riding for Norwood has changed my life in ways that I could never imagine and I am determined to continue to do my very small bit for this noble and amazing cause. I have met the most astonishing and inspiring people and have ridden through deserts, mountains, jungle and bush. Above all else, I have witnessed first-hand what can be achieved with love and determination. I am immensely proud of having done 21 Norwood international bike rides in 20 years and I hope and pray that I can continue to do so for many more.”

Gordon Fox MBE, 75, who helped to establish the Norwood bike rides was also recognised for having completed his 30th ride in Thailand.

Ian Tate said: “The Thailand Bike Ride really was a truly memorable experience for all those involved. Everyone came away with a great sense of achievement and pride, knowing that they not only completed a significant challenge, but also raised vital funds for Norwood’s ongoing work with people with learning disabilities, and children and families in need.”
