More than 400 cycling enthusiasts young and old are gearing up to take part in Norwood’s annual Junior Bike Ride this Father’s Day. Large numbers of sporty youngsters aged 7-14 and their families have signed up for the 10 mile off-road adventure on Sunday, 19 June. The Junior Bike Ride gives young people the opportunity to raise money in order to make a difference to the lives of people who rely on the charity’s services.

Nine-year-old Jack Adler, from Mill Hill, who will participate in the fundraiser for the first time this year, is just one of hundreds of young cyclists getting creative in order to help raise vital sponsorship for Norwood. He and his family have organised a yard sale to take place in early June, through which they hope to generate funds from lucky dips, selling home-made cakes, DVD’s, books and toys.

Jack, who attends Goodwyn School in Mill Hill and will take part with his dad Dan, who is a very keen supporter of Norwood’s fundraising campaign, said: “I wanted to do something to help other children who aren’t as lucky as me. I am very excited about the sale and my sisters are making all the food. We really hope it will make a difference for Norwood! I am looking forward to the ride and have been training on my bike whenever I can.”

The Junior Bike Ride, which last year raised an amazing £35,000, will start at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School in Elstree at 10am. It promises to be a fun family day out and a great opportunity to celebrate Father’s Day, while also helping others who are less fortunate. A number of sponsored gifts and prizes will be offered throughout the day, including a free cycle top, bandana, certificate and medal for every rider, as well as a goody bag. The top fundraiser will win a new Nintendo 3DS.

For the first time, the cycling event, which is being kindly sponsored by Giant Radlett, will welcome several tandem teams whose riders include people who use Norwood’s services, such as James Fine. James, who was diagnosed as brain injured with Celebral Palsy at birth, lives in Norwood residential accommodation in Stanmore and is supported by the charity to live an active and fulfilled life. He is a keen cyclist and regularly takes part in Norwood’s domestic and international Challenges.
