Some took the high road, and some took the low road, but the combined efforts of a group of 55 cyclists who rode through Israel in aid of Norwood has generated a wheely amazing £260,000. During the five-day adventure, which took place 19-27 November, 30 riders rode from Jerusalem to Eilat, while a further 25 opted for an extremely challenging north to south route through the land of milk and honey. The funds raised by both groups will go towards Norwood’s life-changing work with people with learning disabilities, and children and families in need.
Ian Tate, Norwood’s Business Development Manager for Challenges, said: “This year’s Israel Bike Ride has raised an incredible amount of money for Norwood and I’d like to thank all those who took part for their efforts. The funds they have raised are vital to Norwood and will help us to provide life-changing services that benefit some of the most vulnerable people in the community.”
One of the Jerusalem to Eilat participants Douglas Silas, 44, from Finchley, has Cerebellar Ataxia, a rare, degenerative and incurable disorder of the nervous system which affects his coordination and balance and causes double vision and intense fatigue. However, following an intense training regime and with the support of friends Paul Tuhrim and Stephen Harrison, he overcame his difficulties, completed the 380km route on a specially built three-wheel recumbent trike, and is now on course to raise £50,000 for Norwood.
“This was a challenge of a lifetime for me,” said Douglas. “It exceeded all my expectations and words can’t quite describe it. Apart from this sense of achievement, I have also been able to raise a significant amount of money for Norwood at the same time.”
Douglas was joined by Michael Cash, 37, from north London, who has Cerebral Palsy. Michael, who has raised close to £7,000, rode tandem with Ronnie Harris, Norwood’s Chair of Patronage.
