Gifts galore as Norwood holds annual Toy Sweep

12 December 2011

Chanukah came early for 50 children who use Norwood’s services as they took part in the Charity’s annual Toy Sweep at Toys R Us at Brent Cross on Sunday 4th December. The youngsters, their parents and Norwood staff gathered dozens of toys, games and other gifts using £4,500 raised by the Toy Sweep Committee. These will now be distributed among the Norwood’s children and family services, including its three family centres in Hendon, Hackney and Redbridge, its Unity recreational club, and Buckets and Spades short break service.

The children, who were also each given a £12 gift voucher to spend, were entertained by Franco the Magician and were given the opportunity to meet Geoffrey the Giraffe. Over the last 11 years, the Toy Sweep Committee has raised over £70,000 for Norwood and this year arranged a number of fundraising events, including a Fashion Evening and a Winter Gift Fair.

Robbie Weber, whose son has used Rainbow services, said: “It is a wonderful event which provides a much calmer shopping experience. It is lovely to share an event with parents in a similar position.” Meanwhile, Jane Pearl added: “My children enjoyed the whole experience and were delighted to be given the chance to hand-pick a special gift for Chanukah.”

Debra Kleinman, Chair of the Toy Sweep Committee said: “We are delighted to be able to organise this event each year and make a difference to the lives of the vulnerable children and families supported by Norwood. It’s a real pleasure to see the look of joy on the children’s faces as they select their gifts and I’d like to thank all those who have helped us raise funds this year.”
