Summer fun at Hackney Family Centre

31 August 2010

Children at Hackney Family CentreThe poor weather this summer may have put a dampener on most people’s moods, but for Orthodox Jewish families in and around Stamford Hill, spirits have been high with excitement and fun in the air.

For four weeks, Norwood’s Somers Family Centre, which offers support to children and families with social, domestic and health needs, has hosted the Hackney summer play scheme for children up to the age of eight. The scheme, which is held during school holidays, has seen a record number of children, accompanied by their mothers, enjoy the activities on offer.

Over the course of the summer, around 800 children visited the Centre, which became a hive of activity to partake in clay modelling, cooking, glass painting and jewellery making. There was also a trampoline, water play area, sand pit, and a range of sport activities such as badminton, netball, table tennis and football. Mothers were welcome to join in with the activities or relax in the knowledge that their children were able to have fun in a warm and safe environment.

The Hackney summer scheme provides a holiday atmosphere for families in the community, many of whom do not have access to an outdoor area to play, may not have a car to travel or cannot afford to take a trip away. The centre is home to some of the many Norwood services which offer vital support to children and families in need.

Sonia Muscovitch, Norwood’s Development Manager for Redbridge and Hackney, said: “We have seen a record number of children and mothers attend the summer scheme this year, and I am happy that we have been able to provide a stimulating and fun environment for the children and their mothers.”
