Any person who has experienced a marriage or relationship breakdown will understand the emotional significance of that period in their life. On Wednesday 24 November, Norwood’s Family Support service will be running ‘Parents Apart’, a workshop focussing on the journey parents take when in the process of going through a separation or divorce, and will also explore the emotional impact this has on their children.
The workshop will focus around four key areas of importance: the journey so far, children, communication and emotions, and will examine how parents can create the best possible experience for their children. It will also cover aspects of how to understand their child’s emotional and physical needs, how to communicate more successfully with partners and children for a better family outcome and will also provide an overview of the grief and loss cycle which occurs in relationship breakdown.
Eileen Martell, Norwood’s Family Support Service Manager said: “Divorce or separation doesn’t just affect the adults in a relationship – it can affect the way children view relationships for life. If you’re concerned about how your children will cope with the break-up of your relationship, take time to think about how you and your ex-partner can work together to help the children through divorce and the following years. This workshop will help you manage the practical and emotional aspects of being co-parents living apart.”
Two workshops (one at 1:00pm and one at 7:30pm) each lasting two-hours will be held at The Kennedy Leigh Centre on Wednesday 24th November. Sessions will be facilitated by Norwood staff trained by Relate – the relationship people, and parents will be provided with workbooks.
