Fourth Backgammon series raises £37,000 for Norwood

15 March 2010

Norwood’s Backgammon Series 4 concluded with a closely-fought Grand Final at swish West End venue Home House last night, having raised an incredible £37,000 for the Charity. Generously sponsored by The Pears Foundation, the series was launched in June 2009 and saw competitors take part in four qualifying tournaments. The final itself raised £6,500 for Norwood, which provides vital support to people with learning disabilities, and children and families in need.

Some 32 players battled it out for supremacy in the final but after nearly six hours of intense competition the concluding match was eventually won by Tom Duggan. He beat Charles Wigoder to claim the first prize of £1,000. Third place went to Peter Bennet, while the consolation tournament was won by Tor Svensson. Between rounds, participants also had the chance to buy limited edition Geoffrey Parker backgammon games sets.

Mark Pollack, Chair of Norwood’s Backgammon Committee, said: “The Grand Final was a fantastic evening and we saw an incredibly high standard of play. Congratulations to our winner Tom Duggan and all the runners-up. I would also like to thank our sponsors and all the players who took part in tournaments throughout the year. The series has raised a fantastic amount of money for Norwood, and will help it to continue to provide life-changing services to so many people with learning disabilities, and children and families in need.”
