Latest tournament in Backgammon Series 4 raises £4,500 for Norwood

The third tournament of Backgammon Series 4, sponsored by the Pears Foundation, has raised more than £4,500 for Norwood. The event was held on Monday, 23 November, at Home House, an exclusive private members club in the West End.

Around 30 players battled it out for supremacy at the qualifier, which was the third of four leading up to a Grand Final next March. The final match of the tournament was won by Richard Bernstone, with Tony Stewart finishing second. Third place went to Lawrence Powell, while Michael Flesch won the consolation tournament.

Places are still available for backgammon enthusiasts who want to take part in the final qualifying tournament, which will take place on Monday, 1 February, 2010. The winner of each tournament takes home £1,000, while £300 goes to the runner-up. The top four winners all received trophies and will automatically qualify for the Grand Final on Monday, 15 March, 2010.

Event organiser Gemma Wolfson said: “As we approach the final tournament of the series, the competition is really hotting up. We’ve been really pleased with the success of the series so far, and it is attracting some of the biggest names on the backgammon circuit.
“So, if you fancy trying your luck against some of the best players in the country and winning a fantastic prize, why not sign up to Tournament 4? Above all, your support will help Norwood to continue its work providing first-class personalised services to thousands of people each year - helping them, one by one, to change their lives and fulfil their potential.”

Norwood has now established itself as a leading tournament on the backgammon circuit. Last year’s Series 3 raised more than £50,000 for Norwood, which provides vital support to thousands of people with learning disabilities and children and families in need.
