It’s Flora’s London Marathon for Norwood

31 March 2009

Flora Frank, a power-walking great-grandmother from Edgware, is among the twenty-six heroic Norwood fundraisers who have signed up to “run for their money” on Sunday 26 April in her namesake’s 2009 Flora London Marathon.

The 65 year-old grandmother has already completed 18 international marathons on behalf of Norwood: 12 in London, two in New York, and four in Israel, raising nearly £100,000 for Norwood, the UK's leading charity supporting children, families and adults, coping with learning disabilities and social disadvantage, in the Jewish community and beyond.

Last year, runners braved heavy rain and swirling winds as they pounded the streets of London for 26.2 miles to raise a phenomenal £130,000 for Norwood, which is again expected to field the largest number of runners of all the Community’s charities taking part in the event.

51-year old accountant Merrick Wolman, who is participating in his third London Marathon, said, “Running a marathon is the least I can do to assist in the wellbeing and care of those less fortunate than me and my family.”

There are also a number of young fundraisers who will be running for Norwood at the London Marathon this year. 21-year old medical science student, Rafi Glass, said, “Norwood does wonderful work for many Jewish and non-Jewish families going through all sorts of issues and problems. I thought it would be the perfect charity to run for.”

Ian Tate, Norwood’s Head of Challenges, said, “Over the years, our runners have shown incredible drive and commitment, both in terms of their training and their fundraising. I’m sure they’ll do another great job this year, and I’d like to thank them all for raising a fantastic amount of money that has helped us to continue to support vulnerable children and families in our Community.”
