Norwood’s Young People organise their own Fun Day
A Fun Day organised by the Young People’s Focus Group (YPFG) at Norwood was a huge success with over 40 children and their carers enjoying the day out on 19 August 2008.
The Leonard Sainer Centre in Redbridge hosted the day, to which children and young people were invited to enjoy a variety of fun activities and entertainment, including a football session run by three coaches from the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, a performance by a balloon magician, a tea-cup fairground ride, and a visit by the fire brigade.

In an action-packed day, the children and young people were spoilt for choice. In addition to the above, they chose which other activities they wished to take part in, including cookery and arts and crafts. The day was capped off by a very popular barbecue lunch with the menu designed by the YPFG, which included healthy options such as fresh salads, and fruit salad for dessert.
“The young people worked really hard planning the Summer Fun Day,” said Hayley Shenholds, Participation Worker at Norwood. “They worked with their peers to find out what everyone else wanted at the Fun Day, and took this into consideration when making final decisions. The day was a great success, mainly because the young people decided upon every aspect of the day for themselves.”
The Norwood’s Young Peoples’ Focus Group (YPFG), was set up in 2005 to allow young people using Norwood’s disability services to have a voice in the running of their services. Every year, they organise a Fun Day, and they recently arranged a trip to Chessington Zoo.
