4 June 2008

113 Norwood Staff receive NVQ Awards from Service Users

A total of 113 members of Norwood’s care staff received industry awards at two specially-organised ceremonies recently in Berkshire and north London.

The first event took place at East Berkshire Golf Course, and recognised the efforts of staff at Ravenswood Village, Norwood’s residential community for children and adults with learning disabilities. The second event, celebrating the achievement of care workers and outreach workers in Norwood’s residential homes and family centres in North and East London, took place at the Harrow & Wembley Progressive Synagogue Hall.

As is customary at Norwood ceremonies, service users presented many of the awards, with Chief Executive Norma Brier, handing out the rest. Staff members received National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) awards in Health and Social Care, Learning Disability Qualifications (LDQ), NVQ A1 Assessor Awards, and V1 Internal Verifier Awards.

“This is a real occasion to celebrate,” said Norma Brier. “The sheer number of awards achieved demonstrates Norwood’s commitment to being a leading provider of specialist services within the UK’s learning disability sector. Over the next few years, we’re moving towards a person-centred approach. You are already there, with the high standards you have set for yourselves.”

A London service user, Lara Goldbart, was also recognised for her achievement in successfully completing two units of the Admin Level One NVQ.

As they presented awards to care staff, some of the service users took the opportunity to publicly thank their support workers for the high standard of care that they provide. Lionel Bernstein, from a Norwood residential home in Kenton, said: “We would like to thank all the staff for working hard and supporting us.”

Ellen Olsen, Learning and Development Manager at Norwood, said: “Our service users were fully involved in both ceremonies, and that really added to the atmosphere. You could see how proud they were that staff members at their homes had achieved these awards. Our care staff worked extremely hard to gain their NVQ’s at various levels. Norwood will continue to ensure that all our staff have the appropriate qualifications to provide the highest standards of services to our residents.”
