23 October 2008

The Amalfi coastal trek, which took place from 14-19 September 2008, raised £45,000 for Norwood.

A total of 18 participants enjoyed walking 60km along the rugged, winding coastline of south-western Italy, taking in panoramic sea views and breathtaking Mediterranean flora and fauna.

“We trekked past lemon groves and vineyards,” said Philip Bunt, Director of Corporate Services. “We also discovered the hidden treasures and rich traditions that the historic town of Amalfi had to offer. The trek was well organised and great fun, as well as being challenging.”

As with all of Norwood’s challenges, adults with learning disabilities who are supported by Norwood took part in the trek. James Fine has cerebral palsy, and has worked hard to become a keen walker and cyclist. He took part in the South Africa Walk in 2006, and this year participated in the Capital to Coast Cycle Challenge from London to Hove for Norwood together with his family.

This year’s series of challenges ends with the South Africa Bike Ride in
the last week of October and the first week of November, and James will be taking part in this event as well.

Ian Tate, Norwood’s Head of Challenges, said: “Next year’s challenges include participating in the London Marathon or a Waterside Walk in Ascot. If you prefer to get on your bike you could take part in the Junior Bike Ride, Capital to Coast London to Hove Bike Ride or international bike rides in Rajasthan, India and Israel.”
