Waitrose Charity Week benefits Norwood

12 March 2007

Staff at the Temple Fortune branch of Waitrose pulled out all the stops to ensure that their first Charity Week was a roaring success. The team raised more than £1,000 for Norwood, one of the UK’s leading Children & Family Services charities. The money received will go towards providing vital services for children and families in our community.

Staff members entered fully into the spirit of the week, finding innovative ways to raise money. Assistant Section Manager Debbie Garvan raised £280 after colleagues sponsored her to give up smoking. She also raised £20 by offering colleagues a riding lesson on her horse. There was also an auction with a difference, in which staff members made bids to undertake each other’s jobs for a day. The highest bid of £62.00 came from Supermarket Assistant Norbert Fitzsimons for a full day off! Local shoppers played their part too, raising hundreds of pounds by contributing to collection boxes.

Norwood service users visited the store during the charity week to see the fundraising in action and thank the staff. Naomi Mushin, who lives at one of Norwood’s homes in Hendon, said: “What Waitrose are doing is great. It is really good that they are collecting for Norwood.”

Department Manager, Arvind Taylor, said: “We had some really positive feedback from customers saying how nice it is that we are supporting a charity as worthy as Norwood. There has been a Waitrose in Temple Fortune for more than 70 years, and our staff feel strongly that it is important to give something back to the community in which we are based. We are delighted to have raised more than £1,000 for Norwood.“
