Strut: Leeds student fashion show

20 March 2007

Four university students brought a touch of glamour to Leeds last week by organising the Strut Charity Fashion Show in aid of Norwood, a leading UK charity for children and families. More than 600 people packed into Halo nightclub in Leeds, including stars from Hollyoaks and Emmerdale, helping to raise more than £10,000 for Norwood.

The students, Lucy Roiter, 21, Deborah Abrahams, 21, Nicki Sherman, 22 and Chloe Bourne, 21, treated guests to a glittering, professionally choreographed show featuring spring and summer 2007 collections from independent boutiques, national retailers such as Moss Bros and top designers such as Oliver Sweeney. The event was celebrating its fourth year.

As well as watching the models work the catwalk, guests were able to buy clothes from exhibitors, enjoy a performance by world-renowned acrobatic troupe the Wakefield Tumblers or simply soak up the electric atmosphere. There was also a dedicated VIP room in which guests were treated to complimentary sushi, manicures, indian head massages, henna tattoos and drinks. Once the fashion show was over, top DJ Subzero took over to provide the tunes for an after-show model party that had everyone dancing until the early hours.

The organisers, under the committee name “Elle Events” raised the amazing figure through ticket sales, sponsorship deals with companies and a raffle. Raffle prizes included signed copies of the Katie Price and Peter Andre album A Whole New World. One particular fundraising success was a “man auction”, during which guests bid up to £70 for a date with a “popular” male student.

Organiser Deborah Abrahams said: “It was a packed house and everything ran incredibly smoothly. We are delighted to have raised this money for Norwood, which is a charity that helps so many people and is close to our hearts.”

Adele Breslauer, Head of Events and Personal Appeals at Norwood said: "It is fantastic to see students getting involved with Norwood and organising an event of such high quality. The money raised will help Norwood support children and families coping with disability and social difficulties.”
