Marathon golfers show plenty of drive for Norwood

14 June 2007

Sixteen committed fundraisers yesterday completed an astonishing five rounds of golf at five different venues in 16 hours to raise more than £30,000 for Norwood, the UK’s leading Jewish charity for children and families. The participants, taking part in the 13th annual Norwood Golf Aid challenge, teed off at 4am at Abridge, before moving on to Finchley, Hartsbourne, Dyrham Park and Potters Bar. More than £1m has been raised since the first ever Golf Aid event in 1995.

The rainy conditions conjured up images of St Andrews in December, nevertheless, the players posted some creditable scores. The first round began in almost total darkness, with more than a few lost balls. However, as the light increased, the standard of play inevitably improved.

Elstree resident Joseph Arazi, who was taking part in his third Golf Aid challenge, said: "18 holes of golf often leads to a feeling of exhilaration and exhaustion as you walk off the last green – so imagine the feeling after 90 holes! Once again, this year's Golf Aid was superbly organised by Norwood. It is certainly challenging but also very enjoyable and, best of all, it is in aid of a fantastic cause".

Judith Barnett, Challenges Manager at Norwood, commented: “Our golfers showed tremendous spirit to complete the challenge in the face of some extremely testing conditions. As ever, we thank them for their fantastic support.”
