Together Again After 20 Years: Joseph Malovany and the Shabbaton Choir make beautiful music for Norwood

Internationally-renowned Cantor Joseph Malovany performed together with the highly-acclaimed Shabbaton Choir on the evening of Saturday 11 November 2006 at a concert in aid of Norwood, the UK’s leading Jewish Children & Family Services charity. The event, which took place at the New West End Synagogue in St Petersburg Place, was a feast of Jewish liturgical music, and around 500 people attended, helping to raise more than £15,000 for Norwood.

Cantor Malovany flew in especially from New York, where he has served as the Cantor of New York’s prestigious Fifth Avenue Synagogue since 1973. The event marked the culmination of his recent European Tour, during which he has also performed in Paris, Zurich and Munich. However, the London event was the first time in 20 years that he had sung together with the Shabbaton Choir, which is directed by Stephen Levey. They were joined by guest soloist, chazan Jonny Turgel from the Edgware United Synagogue. and boy soloist Jonathan Artman. The audience, which included Dayan Ehrentreu and Cantor Haas , were treated to a number of songs from the synagogue service such as Ein Keloheinu and Yigdal, as well as other renowned classics like Virushalayim and Tal.

Cantor Malovany and the Shabbaton Choir performing at the Ravenswood VillageCantor Malovany and the Choir also performed the following day, Sunday 12 November, at Ravenswood, Norwoods residential community in Berkshire for adults and children with learning disabilities.The residents danced with the Choir and sang along with some of the melodies, while the performers even formed a conga line through the audience!

Speaking at the Saturday night event, Cantor Malovany expressed his joy at being able to sing with the Choir in aid of Norwood. He said: “The Shabbaton Choir is one of the best Jewish choirs in the world today and their sincerity, musicianship and dedication to Jewish liturgical music is exemplary. Norwood is a wonderful organisation, and I have yet to find another place in the world that provides such a high standard of care as Ravenswood. The staff care so much about the education and wellbeing of the residents.”

Emma Sharp, Norwood Community fundraiser, said: “To have Cantor Malovany and the Shabbaton Choir performing two concerts on consecutive days in aid of Norwood was fantastic. The money we have raised will go towards supporting children and families in our community.”
