Charity Walkers Go The Extra Mile (Or Twenty)!

It was a case of ‘putting their best feet forward’ on Sunday 14th May 2006 as 91 community-minded charity challengers stepped up to the plate by participating in a sponsored walk from Kew Gardens to Hampton Court and back again, to raise funds for Norwood and World Jewish Relief. This was the third sponsored walk hosted by the two charities, and the event raised £40,000.

Despite rather cloudy skies, the intrepid challengers, including staff, service users and volunteers, had a spring in their step as they followed the Thames Tow Path past Sion House and on through Richmond & Kingston before stopping at Henry VIII’s former home for a well-deserved lunch break. For those who chose to continue, it was soon time for an about-turn – despite some weary legs – for the return trek to Kew. For the others, who felt that 10 miles of walking was more than enough for one day, a mini-bus was laid on for a return-journey in comfort! Some of the walkers who took part in the event included Steven and Jane Jaffe from Pinner and Jonathan and Andrea Williams from Totteridge.

Judith Barnett, Challenges Co-ordinator at Norwood, was delighted with how the day went. She said: “It was wonderful to see so many people pushing themselves to their limits in aid of the two benefiting charities. Norwood challenges are designed to appeal to as many people as possible, no matter how experienced or able. Today’s challenge proved what can be achieved when people stretch themselves for good. A big thank you to everyone responsible for making the May Walk such a success.”

Nigel Layton, Chairman of World Jewish Relief said: “We are thrilled that the event has yet again been a fantastic success and was enjoyed by all who participated for two such worthy causes. Thank you to all those who took part.”
