Nicole Farhi exhibits at Norwood Art Sale

Nicole Farhi, best known as one of Britain’s most acclaimed fashion designers, showed another side to her talent when she exhibited three of her bronze figure sculptures at the fourth annual Norwood Art Sale at the Catto Gallery in Hampstead on Sunday.

Nicole Farhi, whose work has been shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and is represented in several private collections, impressed collectors with her impressionistic and sensual style, which although sometimes close to abstraction are always related to the human and animal forms.

Hundreds of people attended the Art Sale, which featured works from over 35 British and Internationally renowned artists all of whom chose to exhibit their works in support of Norwood, one of the UK’s leading children & family services care organisations.

The Art Sale featured over 150 pieces of art ranging from paintings, ceramics, sculptures, prints and photography.

Alongside Nicole’s sculptures, other pieces of art up for Sale at the event were works by artists including Lady Deborah MacMillan who contributed four oil paintings inspired by Rembrandt and a charming silkscreen of washerwomen by Lelia Pissarro, the great-granddaughter of Impressionist Camille Pissarro.

Artist Gordon King supplied two works to the Art Sale and painted a third during the event, which was auctioned off by Nicole Farhi.

Photography was included in the Sale for the first time this year, with contributions from Gemma Levine and John Wagner. Another first was the inclusion of works by a 13-year-old teenager from Finchley with dyslexia. David Fearnley’s talent was recently discovered after he sent in a sample of his bar-mitzvah invitation, which he designed for a leading Jewish newspaper.

The Art Sale also featured works produced by some of Norwood’s clients living in the organisation’s residential homes in London and at Ravenswood Village in Berkshire - all sold under the label of ‘Muddy Products’.

Gillian Catto, owner of the Catto Gallery where the event was hosted explained. “Art forms an important part of the resident’s lives. It is especially significant to residents who are completely non-verbal or who have limited communication skills, giving them the opportunity to express themselves creatively. Art is an essential, therapeutic and pleasurable part of many of the resident’s lives and I am delighted to once again be hosting this annual Art Sale at my gallery in aid of Norwood.

Gillian Catto worked closely with the Art Committee, which under the chairmanship of Linda Sharpe arranged the event. Sharpe said: “I feel very privileged to have organised the Art Sale for Norwood again this year. The work that the organisation does for children and families in the community living with social disadvantage and learning disability is unparalleled. A big thank-you to everyone involved in ensuring the success of this event; to Nicole Farhi for taking time out of her busy schedule and being our guest of honour; to all our exhibiting artists; to the staff and management of the Catto Gallery and of course to everyone who attended the Sale.

The event raised £12,500 for Buckets & Spades Lodge, Norwood’s respite care resource for children with disabilities.
