Ed Miliband praises Norwood’s ‘important work’

9 February 2012

The Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP commended Norwood’s ‘important work’ as he helped the Charity to raise £14,000 at its third annual YN Current Affairs Reception. More than 150 young people attended the exclusive fundraising and networking event, which was held at the London offices of law firm Norton Rose. The Labour Party leader was interviewed by Michael White, Assistant Editor of the Guardian, before the floor was thrown open to questions from guests. Topics included the Big Society, bankers’ bonuses, his Jewish heritage, the Americanisation of UK politics, and reform of Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs).

Describing PMQs as a ‘terrible advert for politics’, he said it encouraged a view that politicians were a ‘bunch of school kids who want to shout at each other’. He added: “The Westminster village gets much more excited about it than the population, I believe. I don't know how to change it so I'm not going to make false promises, but I would love to if I could.”

He also discussed how he copes with unrelenting criticism from opposition politicians and the media, dismissing it as ‘froth and nonsense’ and adding: “It is incredibly important to stick to your instincts about what’s right and wrong.”

Speaking after the event, Mr Miliband hailed Norwood’s ‘important work’ and added: “For more than two centuries, Norwood has given support to some of society’s most vulnerable, from people with learning disabilities to families in need. It has a well-deserved reputation for the vital personalised service it gives which allows thousands of people to live the life they choose and achieve their goals.”

“I would congratulate everyone at Norwood for the work they do, it’s certainly very inspiring.”

Elaine Kerr, Chief Executive of Norwood, said: “We are extremely grateful to our special guests, Ed Miliband and Michael White, for giving up their valuable time on behalf of Norwood and for providing our guests with such an entertaining and thought-provoking discussion.

“I would also like to thank our hosts, Norton Rose, and all our guests for supporting Norwood and the people with learning disabilities, and children and families in need, who rely on its life-changing work.”
