Norwood parties like it’s Purim 2010

There were clowns, pirates, superheroes and pop stars galore as Norwood hosted a glitzy Purim disco on Wednesday evening. More than 100 adults who use the Charity’s services attended the bash at Edgware United Synagogue.

The guests, who all live in Norwood residential or supported living accommodation in north-west and north-east London, enjoyed plenty of food and drink before taking to the dance floor to party the night away. It is traditional to dress up at Purim, and the majority of people rose to the challenge and came in a variety of colourful and imaginative costumes.

Ben Silver, 33, who lives in a Norwood home in Stanmore, made a grand entrance as the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. "I had a good time at the Purim party," he said. "I love dressing up as Michael Jackson. Some of the other costumes were really funny, and I want to go again next year!”

Event organiser Shoshana Bloom, Norwood’s new Jewish Cultural Manager, said: “Purim is traditionally a time where people get together to eat, drink and be merry, and this event did not disappoint. All the guests who attended had a wonderful time and everyone got into the spirit of the occasion.”

“I would to thank Edgware United Synagogue for hosting this fantastic event, our caterers Silverman Banqueting for providing such a tasty spread, and all the volunteers who helped make it such a special Purim for each person who came.”

Shoshana, who was appointed in January, has responsibility for developing, supporting and encouraging a vibrant Jewish atmosphere, both culturally and spiritually, for the people who use Norwood’s services. Purim is a festival which commemorates the time when Jews living in ancient Persia were saved from extermination because of the courage of a young woman called Esther.
