Natalie was diagnosed with a rare chromosome disorder. Her parents were confused and scared by the news and were unsure about what to expect. Their doctor put them in touch with a Norwood Child Development Advisor and a Social Worker, who provided them with essential support and guidance right from the start.
When she was three years old, Natalie started going to Unity – Norwood’s recreational scheme for children with disabilities. At six, Natalie was strong enough to go to Buckets & Spades Lodge – Norwood’s short break respite care service for children with disabilities. These services recognise the enormous strain on parents caring for children with disabilities and provide them with welcome relief, enabling them to focus on other areas of their lives.
Both Unity and Buckets & Spades give Natalie the chance to laugh, play, interact with other young people and have fun. When she arrives, she races in without looking back and by the end of her stay, she’s brimming with happiness as if she has just returned from a wonderful holiday.
Whilst Natalie is cared for at Buckets & Spades, her parents are able to enjoy the simple pleasures that most people take for granted. They get a break from being full-time carers, from difficult and stressful morning routines, and the most wonderful tonic of all – a full night’s sleep! It also means that they can spend more time with their younger son and give him that little bit of extra attention he so seldom receives.
Natalie is now 16 years old. She will always have very high support needs owing to her severe physical and learning disabilities. Norwood’s specialist services provide Natalie and her family with a lifeline and only through the generous support of our donors, can we continue to be the safety net for the community.
